Beaumont, Texas ---The Lady Tigers of Grambling State played the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a, 2-2, tie in double overtime in the final game of the Lamar University Classic.
Grambling found pay dirt first when Ashley Baker scored unassisted with a rebound kick in front of the goal at the 15:06 mark and took a, 1-0, lead into the half.
Ten minutes into the second half Lamar made their way to the scoreboard when Kari Davila found Beth Squires who placed a rainbow shot from 40 yards out over goalkeeper Cherie Silas to force the tie. However, less than a minute later Grambling’s Rachele Dobbins beat Lady Cardinals’ keeper Jennifer Gibbs from 25 yards out to retake the lead.
Lamar’s Brittany Ross found Lisa Topping for a one-timer in the 77th minute to round out the scoring.
“I thought that today we took steps backwards. We didn’t play up to our capabilities. We had a mental breakdown. We are very lucky that we came away with a tie instead of a loss. We were moving in slow motion and not doing the small things that got us to the place that we are at now”, said head coach Tamura Crowley. “This game tested our heart and mental toughness and I thought that we came up short in both of those categories. We struggled on every aspect of the game. I was disappointed with the effort and the outcome of the game”
The Lady Tigers will return to action on October 2nd when they host the Lady Jaguars of Southern University.
