Grambling, LA --- The Lady Tigers of Grambling State returned home today to post a huge, 2-1, win over the Cowgirls of McNeese State in a thriller at the Lady Tigers Soccer Complex.
Following a scoreless first half both teams looked to get offensive early in the second period as the Cowgirls and Lady Tigers fired off six and five shots respectively.
A fast paced, high tempo style of play by both teams ensued throughout the period as neither team could put the ball in net. The Cowgirls struck pay dirt first with just over six minutes to play when Megan Rogers found Alana Clark who put the ball just out of reach of Lady Tigers keeper Cherie Silas for a, 1-0, lead with time running down.
“I thought that they played ok. We didn't play up to our potential, but I thought that we showed a lot of perseverance with not giving up and being a goal down late in the game,” said GSU head Coach Tamura Crowley .” “We continued to fight and I like that. I thought that we got away from our game plan, but in the last 15 minutes we started to play with a passion and a purpose.”
On the Lady Tigers next possession Grambling took advantage of a set piece off of a corner kick as Angelica Singh found the feet of Anita Dominique for the tie. Grambling moved ahead when Rachel Dobbins played a ball off the rebound and found McNeese goal keeper Cassandra Read on the ground and skipped the ball into the right corner of the net to seal the victory.
“I am satisfied with the performance. I think that the fight and hard work that the team continued to display till the last whistle blows helps me be more satisfied,” Crawley continued. “We got the W, so I am definitely satisfied at the end of the day.”
Grambling will return to action this weekend when they travel to Beaumont, Texas to participate in the Lamar Tournament. They will face Northwestern (LA) Friday at 11 am and Lamar Sunday at 1pm.
