Tigers Struggle in Loss to Lions

PINE BLUFF---The Grambling State Tigers sputtered tonight as they struggled in a 92-69 loss to the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
 
In the first half the Tigers fell behind early as UAPB jumped out to an 11-4 lead at the 16:36 mark. The Golden Lions extended their lead to as much as 21points at 40-21 before cutting the lead to 44-28 at the half. The Tigers shot a dismal 33.3-percent while the Golden Lions went 52-percent from the field. Grambling also struggled on the boards being out rebounded24-13.
 
The second half opened with Tigers making a brief run that got them within 10 at 45-35. Their shooting improved, however, so did UAPB’s as they scorched the nets at 65-percent. For the game they were outrebounded 43-27.
 
Grambling’s Donald Qualls had a game high 20 points with five steals. Lance Fuertado and George Akpele had 14 points each.
 
The Golden Lions had five players to score in double figures. Terrance Calvin recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists, he also had eight rebounds. Savalance Townsend had a team high 19 points, Labaron Weathers and Tavaris Washington had 12 points each while Tyree Glass turned in 10 points
 
Grambling will return to action Monday night as they remain on the road traveling to Itta Bena, Mississippi to take on the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State in a 7:30 tip-off.

Men's Basketball
Lance Fuertado was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week. Fuertado averaged 13.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in a pair of games vs. Alabama State and Alabama A&M last week. In his top game of the week, Fuertado recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds vs. Alabama State. This is Fuertado’s second Newcomer of the Week award.

Women's Basketball
Secrett Anderson was named SWAC Player of the Week. Anderson averaged 9.0 points 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in a pair of games for the Lady Tigers last week.
