PINE BLUFF---Grambling State Lady Tigers Rachele Dobbins made only one field goal in the game, but no shot of the night was any bigger as her break-away lay-up at the buzzer gave the Lady Tigers a, 61-59, win over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Lady Tigers got off to a slow a slow start as they looked to notch back-to-back wins for the first time in conference play. Struggling from the floor they fell behind 11-0 in the opening four minutes before Secrett Anderson’s lay-up at the 5:37 mark put them on the scoreboard.
Having clawed their way back into the game and twice holding a brief lead Grambling looked to go into the break tied at 27 thanks to an Anderson jumper with 22-seconds remaining; however UAPB’s Amanda Hammond would launch a buzzer beater of her own from behind the arc as the period expired giving the Lady Lions a, 30-27, lead at the intermission.
In the second half the Grambling’s shooting improved, particularly from the charity stripe where they shot 10-of-11. The Lady Tigers kept the game close though they never took a lead and forced the first tie of the half at 59 when Dobbins found Kristen Harper on the baseline corner in front of the GSU bench for three with 23-seconds on the clock.
The Lady Lions had an opportunity to make an attempt at the win but Anderson forced a turnover by Tashayla Jackson and then found a streaking Dobbins who made it to the rim as time expired to steal the victory.
Anderson recorded a game high 17 points with four assists. Wymeka Randle turned in 11 points and six rebounds, while Harper, Wyneishia Randle and Kiare Marshall added six points each.
Shay Holmes posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Lions. Jasmine Abrams had a team high 12 points with five rebounds.
Grambling will return to action Monday night as they remain on the road traveling to Itta Bena, Mississippi to take on the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State.
