Grambling, LA ---The Grambling State Tigers took one step closer to securing at least an eight seed in the 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament by posting a 65-59 win tonight over the Southern Jaguars.

The Fred C. Hobdy Arena was rocking tonight as the Tigers in the mist of a five game losing streak looked to break it against their arch rivals. The 3, 986 fans in attendance was not let down as the G-Men down 0-1 took a quick 2-1 lead and never trailed again as they pulled away to 33-26 halftime lead.

The first half would see the Tigers use the outside shot and stifling defense as they drained five three-point baskets and forced seven turnovers, while out rebounding the Jaguars 22-16.

In the second half the Tigers continued to hold Southern at bay and led by as much as 46-32 with with14:32 remaining. The Jaguars however never laid down closing the lead to three 58-55 with 58-seconds remaining but could come no closer as the Tigers drained seven-of-nine free throws in the game’s final minute.

Donald Qualls had a game high 19 points to lead the Tigers. Ariece Perkins had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. George Akepele and Ruport Rose had seven points apiece.

Southern was led by Madut Bol’s 11 points. Brandon White added eight points.

The Tigers will return to action Monday night when they play host to the Braves of Alcorn State at 8:00 pm in the Hobdy Arena in a game carried live on ESPNU.
