Grambling, LA --- The Grambling State Tigers defense, donned in black, used a new attack style to impose its will on a struggling offense as they, dismantled the Gold clad offensive unit, 31-14, in the Tigers annual Black and Gold football scrimmage.
Head coach Rod Broadway's defensive changes were fully apparent today as the Black team racked up 12 sacks, 3 interceptions, and a pair of fumbles in what turned out to be a long day for a struggling Gold team.
Although the defense stole the show, offensively, the Tigers showed bright spots in their running game where the one-two punch of
Frank Warren (2009 2
nd team All-SWAC) and
Cornelius Walker (2009 2
nd team All-SWAC) turned in a solid performance. Warren picked up 43-yards on 10 carries including a 15-yard scamper for the Gold team's first score (Ari Johnson's PAT Good); Walker turned in 44-yards on eight carries including a 30-yard burst up the middle.
Starting quarterback
Danny Reyes completed 14-of-28 passes for 149-yards with a 16-yard touchdown pass to
Damian Jefferson (Johnson's PAT Good). Reyes was picked off by linebacker Mychael Sampson on the opening drive and then by defensive back
David Stuckman to end the game.
Justin Higgins completed two-of-nine passes for 19-yards with an interception. Warren had five receptions for 41 yards to lead all receivers;
Kiare Thompson added a 38-yard reception to set up the Reyes to Jefferson touchdown.
The Tigers have now wrapped up spring drills and look forward to the 2010 season opener against Louisiana Tech in the Port City Classic, Labor Day weekend at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, LA.
