Grambling, LA---Grambling State’s men’s golfer Jonathan Coleman made history today as he became not only the first golfer in school history but the first golfer in Northeast Louisiana to receive an automatic qualifier bid into the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Coleman, winner of the 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championships, will head to the NCAA South Central Regional hosted by Texas A&M May 20-22 at Traditions Golf course in nearby Bryan, Texas to compete in individual competition the NCAA announced today.

“It feels good.  It feels like all the hard work I put in at the beginning has paid off,” Coleman said.  “I’m really motivated to go out there and take it to the next level, go out there and see how far I can go against the big schools, the big names.  Try and win it.”

“This has never happened before.  Louisiana Tech, ULM nobody in northeast Louisiana has ever won a championship and received an automatic bid into the tournament…This hasn’t been done before but to say it happened at Grambling first means a lot.  He has worked his butt off,” GSU Head Golf Coach Tegitra Thomas continued.  “It says that the program is capable of maturing people who come here with talent.  They come with talent and can develop to be a champion.”

The NCAA South Central Regional is one of six golf regional championships that will determine the field at the NCAA Championships, which will be contested at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn., June 1-6, 2010. The top five teams and the low individual player not on those teams at the South Central Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships final site.
