Grambling, LA---The Grambling State Tigers baseball team dropped a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference western division series, 3-0, to the Jaguars of Southern University this weekend in the Tigers final series of the season.
GAME I: GSU 5 – SU 9
In game one the Jaguars and Tigers both jumped on the scoreboard notching two runs each in their half of the inning. The Tigers moved ahead in the third inning picking up two unearned runs for a 4-0 advantage. Southern, however, responded in the seventh inning adding three runs for a 5-4 lead. They would add a run in the eighth before Frazier Hall and David Worthington notched back to back solo homeruns in the ninth inning. Grambling’s ninth inning rally fell short as they picked up only one run after Alvin Simmons led off the inning with a triple to right field and scored a Jeremy Shelby sacrifice fly to center field.
The Tigers were led by Simmons and Chris Wolfe who both went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. On the mound Adrian Turner took the loss after giving up seven runs in eight innings of work.
Southern’s Ozzie Lamis and Gregory Whitfield both recorded three hits a run and an RBI to lead the Jaguars. Sharrod Brooks recorded 12 strikeouts while allowing two earned runs for the win.
GAME II: GSU 1 – SU 5
The night cap proved to be a thriller throughout although Southern held a 4-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning when Grambling’s Brandon Smith scored the Tigers lone run on a Turner single. The Jaguars added an unearned run in the ninth when Hall scored on a James Armstrong single.
Wolfe, Turner, Arthur Mazierski and Richard Bautista recorded two each for the Tigers. Eric Zagone allowed only three earned runs in eight innings for the loss.
Hall and Lamis had two hits and two runs apiece; Armstrong and Worthington had two hits each. Brian Foster recorded the win going seven innings. Cody Hall picked up the save.
GAME II: GSU 1– SU 7
The final game of the series saw the Tigers jump out with a 1-0 lead on a two out Mychael Roby solo home run in the second inning. Southern tied the game in the top of the third and went ahead 2-1 after the fourth. After taking a 3-1 lead the Jaguars pushed ahead 6-1 on a three-run DeMario Ellis homerun.
Brandon Smith led the Tigers going 2-for-3 at the plate. Odingo Davila went seven innings recording the loss allowing four earned runs.
The Jaguars where led by Worthington’s 3-for-5 plate performance. David Nolting added two hits a run and a RBI. Jesse Holiday recorded the win in six innings allowing one run.
