SHREVEPORT---The Grambling State Tigers baseball team played errorless ball and belted 16 hits in a 17-2 thrashing of the Hornets of Alabama State in second round action of the 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament.

 

The Tigers scored in all but one inning as they struck early and often.  They picked up three runs in the first two innings before allowing the Hornets their only two scores in the bottom of the second.

 

Grambling picked up four unearned runs in the top half of the fourth inning on a bases loaded two RBI single up the middle by Chris Wolfe; followed by a two RBI triple to right field by Anthony Clifton.

 

The Tigers were held scoreless in the fourth, but added a single run in the fifth before pouring in five runs in the sixth inning.  Steve Kletke doubled in Arthur Mazierski and Milt Barney before scoring himself on a Mychal Roby single through the left side.  Roby would go on to score on a Jeremy Shelby single and later Brandon Smith would score on Wolfe’s second single up the middle.

 

In the seventh and final inning Grambling would tack on four more runs highlighted by a Smith two RBI double scoring Barney and Kletke.  Pinch Hitter Adrian Turner who had reached base on a right field error along with Smith would later score.

 

Grambling was led by Wolfe and Shelby both of whom recorded three hits.  Wolfe added two runs and four RBI’s; while Shelby had two runs and two RBI’s.  Kletke had a two-for-four day at the plate with four RBI’s and two runs scored.  On the mound Odingo Davilla recorded the win after pitching a complete game allowing only two runs with six strikeouts.

 

The Hornets Kejuan Riley went two-for-two at the plate with an RBI.  Drew Quinney suffered the loss after giving up 12 runs (seven earned) in five and two-thirds innings.

 

Grambling will face the winner of the noon Texas Southern versus Alabama State game tomorrow night at 6:00 pm at the State Fair Grounds.
