GRAMBLING---D.J. Williams connected with
Van Phillips on the first two passes of tonight's scrimmage for 35-yards to provide an early spark, however, the Grambling State defensive unit would light up the night as the Tigers completed their first week of fall camp.
The Tigers offense, that ended the opening drive with a 25-yard field goal by
Zoltan Riazzo for their only score, showed they had more than a handful to deal with facing one of the top front-seven in the conference as they struggled at times to keep the defensive line out of their backfield.
“Defensively Savage,
Antoine Rogers, Antonio Lenard are who they are. I thought the linebackers played well and the defensive backs played as well as the front seven let them,” said Head Coach Doug Williams. “Overall it's something to work with. We got it on tape in some game situations, now we can go back, learn and make corrections.”
Offensively the Tigers showed bright spots especially in the skill positions.
Running back Juwan Martin had several bruising runs, while Mario Louis thrilled the crowd with several acrobatic catches.
“What we tried to do today especially down the stretch was to get the younger guys some playing time. If you noticed down the line the offense made some pretty big plays.” Williams added, “The receivers are looking good with Mario Lewis, Spivey,
Charles Bailey and
Van Phillips when we go four receivers. Talking with Sammie (Sammie White, Receivers Coach) today we feel we have about six receivers that we can hang our hats on when we need a play.”
The Tigers will resume two-a-day practices tomorrow with the first session in the morning at 8AM followed by an evening practice at 7PM.
