Tigers Dress Up for Morning Practice

Defense (Black) and Offense (Gold) engage in friendly banter before practice
GRAMBLING---After two evening practices in shorts and shirts the Grambling State Tigers football team changed gears today and tackled the heat of the morning in helmets and shoulder pads as preseason camp continues.

“We saw a little more movement from the team today. The guys really don't like the shorts because they see it as a conditioning thing but it's more of a mental phase of the game for us (coaches),” said Grambling Head Coach Doug Williams. “With the pads on you get a chance to see what football is all about, they can bump around into each other, make some contact and feel safe about it.”

Despite the intense heat of the morning, practice consisted of a spirited session of seven-on-seven drills where they received a strong showing from the wide receivers, a position that coming into camp was a definite question mark, along with an equally intense one-on-one session amongst offensive and defensive lineman.

“We knew coming in we were going to be young especially on the offensive side. “We have a couple of guys that have really stood out. I'm really pleased with the receivers when you talk about Spivey and Mario (Louis) that have come a long way from where they were in the spring.  With the transfer of Charles Bailey (from Mississippi State) coming in, together with some young guys and even the running backs have showed a surprising maturity level.”  Williams said.

“Our team is in pretty decent condition they had a good summer with Coach Butler our strength coach. We've been fortunate to go at night and have a little breeze so we haven't really had any heat casualties besides some cramping,” Williams continued. “The main thing is to keep them hydrated with plenty of water and powerade.”
