GRAMBLING---The Grambling State Tigers football team turned it up a notch this evening as they donned full pads for the first time in fall practice.
After several days of shorts and shirts and shells the Tigers welcomed a chance at contact to shake of the proverbial rust since they last dressed out in the spring.
“The thing about shells and pads you pretty much practice the same way. The one thing you don't want is anyone tackling in practice and you don't want any blocking low. You still want to try and stay healthy,” said Head Coach Doug Williams. “You can do the same things in shell that you do in pants, you just want to regain the feel of being dressed out completely.”
The Tigers will enjoy an off day tomorrow as they move towards their first day of two-a-day practice on Wednesday followed by their first scrimmage of preseason Thursday evening.
“We have an off day tomorrow. We feel like the kids have worked their butts off and deserve a break. Every now and then you have to throw them a bone,” Williams said.
