GRAMBLING, La. -- Grambling State got back on track Tuesday, much to the pleasure of Head Coach Doug Williams.
The Tigers (1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference) held what Williams called a "real good practice" as the Tigers put last weekend's loss at the University of Louisiana-Monroe in the past and turned their focus toward Saturday's SWAC road game at Alabama State University.
"We're all trying to get down the same road to the same destination - Birmingham (Ala., site of December's SWAC Championship game. "And that road goes through Alabama - this weekend we play at Alabama State and the following game will be against Alabama A&M in Grambling.
"The guys came out today well rested and worked hard. We needed a day like today, because Alabama State (1-1) opened with a big conference win over Mississippi Valley (41-9) and then stayed close in a loss (14-7) at Eastern Michigan. Those games showed they play pretty good on both sides of the ball, so we have our work cut out for us."
GSU is having to prepare for two quarterbacks with differing playing styles as ASU QBs Greg Jenkins and Devin Dominquez have combined to throw 64 passes this season without an interception.
Jenkins, the starter, is coming off an injury and has connected on 39-of-42 passes for 288 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also leads the Hornets in rushing with 85 yards and a score on 24 carries. Dominquez, who Williams said stays in the pocket more, has connected on 12-of-20 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
"The starter was injured against Eastern Michigan and we don't know if we'll see him or the backup," Williams said. "So our defense has some extra working preparing for both of them."
