NEW ORLEANS, LA (November 24th, 2012) - The Grambling State University Tigers trailed the Southern University Jaguars at the half by the score of 21-17.
The Tigers started out of the gate fast in the first half as they scored on their opening drive.
D.J. Williams threw a 31 yard touchdown strike to
Anthony McGhee. The PAT by Phares Wabo would make the score 7-0 GSU.
The defense would come up big in the first quarter as
David Smith would recover a fumble by the Southern University offense. The Tiger offense would take advantage of the turnover as
D.J. Williams would pass for his second touchdown of the game, this time a 16 yard strike to
Musa Mahmud. The PAT by Wabo would make the score 14-0 and that is where the score stood after the first quarter.
Southern would make a come back in the second quarter as they scored 21 unanswered points including, two drives over 70 yards.
Joseph Dray would throw two touchdown passes to Charles Hawkins and another to Jerry Joseph.
The G-Men would close the gap at the end of the first half as Phares Wabo would kick a field goal with no time left in the first half to close the gap to 21-17 at the half.
Anthony McGhee had three receptions for the Tigers for 39 yards and a touchdown. For the Jaguars Charles Hawkins had five catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers had 30 plays for 148 yards on offense.
Notes: This year is the 25th anniversary of Doug Williams becoming the first Black Quarterback to win a Superbowl and become Superbowl MVP.
