Grambling, La. – (March 20, 2014) – This will be a busy weekend for the Grambling State University Athletics. Several sports teams are on the road, while the football, baseball and women's tennis teams are all in Lincoln Parish this weekend.
The GSU football team will hold their annual Black and Gold Spring Football game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Tigers will begin the celebration during the week with an array of events. On Friday there will an appreciation lunch for GSU faculty and staff members inside the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center in the Mary Hobdy Foyer. That evening there will be a "Meet the Coaches" social, which will be held from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. at the Eddie G. Robinson Museum.
Saturday the events will start bright and early with a breakfast social for all former players and alumni to be held at Ryan's Family Steakhouse in Ruston from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Members of the national and University Alumni office will be present at this event. The afternoon will kick-off at 12 noon with the G-Men hosting a flag football game featuring former players. The game will be held at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.
The festivities will continue at 1 p.m. with a "Black and Gold" game parade to go throughout the campus and then at 2:30 the Tigers will kick off the annual Black and Gold Spring Football game. Admission to all of the activities are free with the exception of the breakfast social at Ryan's on Saturday morning, which is $7.00 for the meal per person.
The festivities during the game will include a quarterback challenge, a field goal kicking contest and free ice cream given out to the first 300 fans that come out to the game courtesy of Blue Bell Ice Cream in Ruston. Football season tickets will also be on sale Saturday. The ticket office at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center will open at noon on game day. Tailgate and general parking at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium is free on game day so get there early.
The weekend will also feature the GSU baseball team taking on rival Southern University Saturday and Sunday at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park. The double header on Saturday will begin at 12 noon and the single game on Sunday will be at 1 p.m. Tickets for the baseball game are just $5.00 and will go on sale one hour before the game at the baseball stadium.
The big home weekend will conclude on Sunday, March 23rd when the Lady Tiger Tennis team will face Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. Admission to the tennis match on the campus of Louisiana Tech University is free. While those three teams are in Lincoln Parish, there are several teams on the road. The GSU outdoor track and field team is on the road in Houston as they will participate in the annual "Texas Southern University Relays".
The softball team is on the road in Longview, Texas competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Round-up. The Lady Tigers will compete against all five teams from the eastern division. GSU will face Alabama State on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. On Saturday the Lady Tigers will face Alabama A&M University at 10 a.m. and then Mississippi Valley at 12:30 p.m. Sunday GSU will complete the SWAC Round-Up with two games. They will face Jackson State University at 12:30 p.m. and Alcorn State at 3 p.m.
