GSU Men's Cross Country Team Wins SWAC Championship

Freshman runner named SWAC cross country athlete of the year

Clinton, Mississippi -- The Grambling State University men's cross country team traveled to Mississippi for a competition and left as the SWAC men's cross country champions.

The team was recognized during the GSU-Mississippi Valley State University homecoming football game on Saturday (Oct. 24), receiving a standing ovation as they punched fists in the air and jumped for joy. It's not every day that the cross country team is acknowledged by 10,000 people.

Runner Hassan Chepkwony finished first place overall, and he was named SWAC cross country athlete of the year. Chepkwony left Clinton with that honor after winning SWAC runner of the week four times this season, including three consecutive weeks.

The Kenya native is just a freshman and has already made a name for himself. Chepkwony most recently took 1st place title at Louisiana Tech's "Mook Triple Dual", September 19th. The previous week he finished 4th at the Lois Davis Invitational right after coming in 3rd at in the Mississippi College Opener.
